Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global pandemic with over 9.1 million laboratory-confirmed cases and more than 473 000 deaths reported worldwide since first being identified in China in December 2019. In the United States, current projections indicate that the death toll will exceed 180 000 by October 2020. COVID-19 is caused by the novel coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Although most patients with COVID-19 recover without complications, a unique subset of patients develop severe disease. Recent data suggest that patients with severe COVID-19 account for only 6% to 15% of all cases but make up approximately 60% of all intensive care unit (ICU) admissions for the disease.3, 4  Complications of COVID-19 include acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), septic shock, and multiorgan failure.
