In this issue of the journal, Browne and Braden describe nursing turbulence as additional work encountered by nurses such as interruptions, looking for equipment, and resolving missing medications. This description covers almost all days providing patient care in any environment. Current acuity systems neither identify nor capture this work or its impact; however, these activities have a considerable impact on nursing workload and patient safety. Defining nursing workload without consideration of these “turbulent” issues in the environment will not truly capture the stresses of the workday in providing patient care. Navigation of interruptions and distractions can be difficult even for the most seasoned of nurses. Imagine the impact on those newer to the profession!
