Nurses working in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) must constantly manage varying levels of workload burden as they go about their clinical day. Clinical protocols, often developed in part by nurses, are commonly implemented to reduce burden by supporting PICU nurses’ clinical decision-making. However, these protocols may unintentionally exacerbate burden, diminishing the quality of the clinical care they provide. For example, glycemic control protocols are routinely implemented within the PICU but may actually increase nurses’ perceptions of workload burden. Relatively little has been published on workload in the PICU, especially in relation to the management of a clinical protocol. Therefore, this study sought to explore PICU nurses’ perceptions of workload when managing a patient on a glycemic control protocol.
