During stay-at-home orders this spring, I spent a few evenings watching the movies of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with my husband. One exchange deeply impressed me:

Like you, I wish the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic need not have happened in our time. It is okay to have that desire and balance it with a decision about what you are going to do. You, the community of critical care nurses, have had to decide how to respond during the unfortunate time we find ourselves in. You have decided, with resounding solidarity, to show up. To advocate for your patients and coworkers. To care for people who are ill or dying. To support each other in big and small ways. I am so proud and humbled to be a part of the courageous way the critical care nursing community has responded to the pandemic.
